Cornelius Gets Its Own Christmas Parade This Year, and December 5 Now Has Two

For one Saturday only, Highway 115 is hosting two holiday parades three hours apart. Old Town Cornelius steps off at 10 a.m. on December 5. Davidson follows at 1 p.m. with a shorter version of the parade the two towns have shared for more than four decades. Neither town planned it this way. A construction project on the road between them forced the change.

Most years, a December Saturday in north Mecklenburg comes down to one parade at one time. In 2026, December 5 runs from a morning in Old Town to a lit Town Green in Davidson after dark. The day only fits together if you know why the two towns ended up apart.

What Broke the Route

The North Mecklenburg Holiday Parade has traditionally been a two-town event. In 2025 it stepped off at 1 p.m. on Saturday, December 6, and followed roughly two miles of Main Street and Highway 115 from Davidson down to North Main Street and Catawba Avenue in Cornelius.

That corridor is now a work zone. The North Carolina Department of Transportation is running a $15 million contract, awarded in late 2023, that covers two linked projects. One builds a roundabout at NC 115 and Potts Street in Cornelius, replacing the old T-intersection and shifting the junction west. The other connects Potts, Sloan and Beatty streets in Davidson into a parallel route to NC 115, with roundabouts near the NC 115/Potts intersection and at Sloan, Beatty and Griffith. Caton Construction of Virginia is the contractor on both.

In its March update, NCDOT said both projects should be complete in late 2026, with landscaping and vegetation work continuing through spring 2027. By October 28, the Town of Davidson described the completion date for the work along Highway 115/South Main Street as unknown. The town said the two towns "explored every potential option to keep the parade on its original course" before choosing a shorter route.

Davidson kept the parade name and the traditional staging area. Cornelius ended up with a morning of its own.

Old Town Gets the Morning

Cornelius Today reported that Old Town Cornelius Inc. worked with the town to organize a one-year Cornelius Christmas Parade so that a parade would still reach downtown Cornelius this December.

The route reverses the direction residents are used to seeing. According to the Old Town Cornelius parade page, floats stage at Mt. Zion Church and travel north along Highway 115, ending near Pecan Street. After the parade, Cornelius Town Hall hosts festivities from about 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with live music, local vendors, food trucks, family activities and photos with Santa.

Neighborhood groups, nonprofits, churches, schools and businesses that want a spot in the lineup should note the limits. Entries are free but capped at 50 and reviewed on a rolling basis. Applications close Friday, November 20, at 11:59 p.m., and approved groups get final staging instructions by Monday, November 30. With the event two weeks from that deadline as this post publishes, a group still deciding has very little time left.

Organizers told Cornelius Today they have no plans to make it an annual event. The North Mecklenburg parade is expected back on its full Davidson-to-Cornelius route in 2027.

The Whole Day, Hour by Hour

The split spreads December 5 across the whole day. Here is how the published schedules line up:

Time Event Where
10:00 a.m. Cornelius Christmas Parade steps off Mt. Zion Church, north on Hwy 115 to near Pecan Street
About 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Town Hall festivities, Santa photos, food trucks Cornelius Town Hall
1:00 p.m. 44th North Mecklenburg Holiday Parade Main and Griffith streets, Davidson, south to South Street
6:00 to 9:00 p.m. Christmas in Davidson, final night Downtown Davidson
7:30 p.m. White Christmas, doors at 6:30 Cain Center for the Arts, Cornelius

The overlap at midday is the one real decision. Cornelius Town Hall runs until about 2 p.m., and Davidson's parade starts at 1. A family that wants Santa photos in Old Town and a curbside spot in Davidson will need to leave Town Hall early, since the published schedules leave no gap between the two.

Filling the Gap Downtown

Last year, a parade day in downtown Cornelius came at the tail end of someone else's route. This year, Old Town is the starting point, and the downtown it hosts has changed. In a September roundup, Cornelius Today listed a wave of new storefronts along Catawba Avenue, including Pure Olive, Starlight Bakery, Old Town Vinyl and Jaleedy's Dairy Bar. The same piece noted that Dutchman's Casual Living had moved to Oak Street Mill.

Here is how those spots line up with the day's schedule, using the hours each business publishes:

  • Before the parade: Willow Wood Coffee at 19801 S. Main St. lists Saturday hours of 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., the only stop on this list with posted hours that cover a 10 a.m. step-off.
  • Late morning browsing: Pure Olive opened in July in a 650-square-foot Catawba Avenue storefront across from the Cain Center, according to Cornelius Today. Old Town Vinyl is at 21333 Catawba Ave.
  • Noon onward: The Peach Cobbler Factory at 21303 Catawba Ave. and Barley Market at 20052 Zion Ave. both list Saturday openings at noon.
  • Dinner before the show: Seaboy at 20822 N. Main St. lists Saturday hours from 4 to 10 p.m.

Starlight Bakery, Jaleedy's Dairy Bar, The Coffee Shop at 21234 Catawba Ave., The Corner Crust at 21726 Catawba Ave. and Barrel & Fork at 20517 N. Main St. round out the downtown options. Cornelius Today's roundup also described Barley Market as downtown's only true bar or brewery. If your group wants a drink between the noon crowd and the evening, it is the one downtown option.

Davidson Keeps the Afternoon and the Night

Davidson's 1 p.m. parade is about half the length of last year's. The town's notice puts the route at about one mile. It starts at Main and Griffith streets, heads south on Main Street/Highway 115 to South Street, follows South Street and ends near McEver Fields and Davidson Elementary School. Questions go to Davidson Parks and Recreation at [email protected].

That shorter route pairs with the evening. Christmas in Davidson runs Thursday, December 3, through Saturday, December 5, from 6 to 9 p.m. each night. The opening ceremony, Santa's arrival and the tree lighting on the Town Green happen Thursday at 6 p.m. So parade Saturday is also the festival's closing night.

For a sit-down evening closer to home, the Cain Center for the Arts is staging White Christmas at 7:30 p.m. on December 3, 4 and 5, with doors at 6:30. A 3 p.m. matinee follows on Sunday, December 6, and the show returns December 10 through 13. On December 5, that puts a Cornelius curtain right in the middle of Davidson's final festival night.

One Saturday Earlier at the Same Town Hall

Downtown Cornelius gets a second holiday event the week before the parade. The 15th annual Light Up Cornelius is set for Saturday, November 28, from 4 to 7 p.m. Visit Lake Norman lists the event at 21445 Catawba Ave. It is free and draws thousands of people each year. The program includes community performances, children's activities, a sledding hill, trackless train rides, a model train display, s'mores, food and drink, and a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus.

That means Old Town hosts two downtown holiday events seven days apart in 2026: the 4 p.m. tree lighting event on November 28 and its own parade on the morning of December 5. Davidson keeps its parade at 1 p.m. and its tree lighting on the Town Green on December 3. Both towns expect to rejoin for the 45th North Mecklenburg Holiday Parade in 2027, once Highway 115 reopens to the traditional route.

Once the Potts Street roundabout opens, it will also change how the stretch of Highway 115 between the two downtowns drives day to day. If you're weighing a home along that corridor, or getting one ready for spring, the Owning Lake Norman team follows these projects block by block and can tell you what the finished road will mean for your street.
